volunteering as a Befriender with someone living with dementia is all about supporting that person to continue to do the things they might well have loved doing all their life – simple things such as pottering around their garden, having a natter over a cup of coffee, going for a stroll or playing a game of scrabble or dominoes. It always starts in the person’s home but can extend out into the community if that is what both people want and feel comfortable doing. It doesn’t take a huge amount of time – maybe up to 2 hours every week or fortnight – and it’s always within the hours of 9.00 to 4.00, Monday to Friday. No special skills or experience are needed; all we ask is that our volunteers are patient and reliable, have good communication skills, are willing to commit to volunteering for at least 6 months once they’ve completed their training and are able to submit a simple written report after each visit. Knowledge of dementia is not required, just a willingness to learn a little about the condition. We provide full training, one-to-one support via a dedicated Role Manager, cover agreed out of pocket expenses and run regular volunteer team meetings.
