The Panel considers appeals from parents where their child has not been allocated their preferred school due to the school being oversubscribed. The Panel decides appeals for several Academies and faith schools in Slough. Members (supported by a Clerk) listen to evidence from all parties and decide whether to allow or refuse the parent’s appeal. The Panel usually convenes with three Members and to provide a balance, the Panel must have at least one Education Member and one Lay Member. For Education Members, applications are welcomed from individuals who have experience in the education sector such as teachers (including retired teachers), school governors, and parents who have a school age child. Applications are also welcomed from individuals who would like to join the Panel as a Lay Member, having no specific education experience. No formal qualifications are needed but important qualities include being a good listener and communicator, having sensitivity to parents’ concerns and being able to take a common sense, objective approach to decision-making.
